Service excellence is acknowledged as a key driver of bottom-line results and will enable South African accommodation service providers to deliver an unforgettable customer service experience to tourists. However, challenges highlighted in the NTSS include the poor culture of service, lack of service ethos and skills, inconsistent customer service delivery, exacerbated by poor leadership in these areas. Tourism has become one of the most valuable industries for numerous countries and their communities throughout the world and this is evident from its inclusion in many governmental economic development strategies. The process of globalisation is just one aspect that will have a major impact on tourism markets around the world and this development is particularly relevant in the harmonization context of cross-border tourism (C-BT). There are various impacts associated with globalization and the development of tourism across two or more national boundaries, i.e. regional tourism development. There are growing concerns over aspects such as climate change, the loss of biodiversity, resource use and other impacts on the local residents of a country or region. In any situation where tourism development takes place over a number of national borders, the issue of complexity is brought about by the fact that multiple stakeholders are involved.In order for any form of development to occur, these public and private stakeholders need to cooperate with each other and therefore the concept of collaboration arises which involves joint decision making to adress the issues of globalization.Therefore, in the context of this study, collaboration needs to be an emerging process with regards to the current situation of tourist guide training in southern Africa. This study, on the basis of this assertion, seeks to determine the socio-economic impacts of rural tourism routes in KwaZulu-Natal on adjacent communities, through case study approaches to the three: the Zululand Heritage Route, the King Shaka Route and the Zululand Birding Route. The fundamental objectives of this study are to identify the nature of tourism routes and their impacts and the benefits accruing to the local communities. It was anticipated that the findings of this research study would help by revealing the extent to which local communities understand and participate in tourism development issues.
